SinglePlayer: save before exit!
If you are playing single player, press shift-G and then "Save World" before you exit the game.
The game seems currently not (or not always) to save when you exit the game. The normal server saving (5 minutes default I think) works, but if you lose some work each time you exit the game you will not be happy.
